Our work embraces the Faith-Based Principles for Immigration Reform and focuses on the following themes:
• Direct aid that extends the right to provide humanitarian assistance
• Witnessing and responding
• Consciousness raising

Ernesto was fired from the TRW auto parts plant in Reynosa, Mexico for organizing with fellow workers.
The workers in Reynosa began organizing in March 2009 after TRW Vehicle Systems gave notice that the workers would be transferred to the TRW plant located in the Reynosa Industrial Park on the other side of town. For the workers, this meant two extra hours commute to work, as well as higher transportation costs. Poverty wages at the plant of $60 to $65 for a 48-hour week do not cover basic living expenses. Moreover, workers who drop their children at daycare would be hours away from them, should there be an accident or illness. In addition, the 800 workers would potentially face layoffs or displace workers already working at the TRW Reynosa plant, where there is not adequate room for the extra workers.
The TRW workers in Reynosa formed the TRW Workers’ Coalition and tried to negotiate with TRW management. The result was that TRW unjustifiably fired the leadership of the TRW Workers’ Coalition and blacklisted the Coalition members. For this reason, the Workers’ Coalition presented more than 300 complaints including the demand for back pay, against TRW.

Hey NorthStar Supporters:
We apologize for shorting you on our September newsletter. Things got a little hectic. As you may have heard, we are now housing the Lansing Workers Center. It launched on Labor Day with a press conference and open house. It was a success. We are very happy to be working with the workers center. We have also launched an online events calender, so check out some of the cool events happening this month.
We have also launched our Fall fundraising campaign. Please read this recent post and visit our Support Page to learn more.
In solidarity,
The NorthStar Collective
Dear NorthStar Supporters:
We wanted to share our excitement about our new website with you and reach out now to let you know that the NorthStar Center needs your support to continue fostering a culture of resistance and creating space for organizing and radical thinking in Lansing, MI.
We are looking for 75 new monthly donors to help us pay our bills all year long. Monthly donations of $5, $10, $25 and more will make all the difference in helping us host, support and facilitate organizing in our community. Monthly donations help us plan for the future and sustain our organization during these lean times. Please consider showing your support for NorthStar Center and become a monthly donor today!
The NorthStar Center is committed to growing and enriching the political and cultural debate in Lansing by consistently adding a radical presence and analysis to issues and events.
Thus far, 2009 has been an eventful year for the NorthStar Center. Many exciting projects and partnerships have been initiated and we need your help to keep our doors open. We have launched a revamped website that will allow us to reach out further to the greater Lansing community. Keep our original website, northstarcenter.wordpress.com, to see what we’ve done these past three years.
In October 2008, NorthStar held a community meeting about immigration raids that kicked off the No Human is Illegal Network. Now NorthStar Center is one of the many community organizations that has endorsed making Lansing a Sanctuary City. Sanctuary City status means that Lansing would agree not to participate in Federal Immigration Enforcement and that Lansing would not accept funds from the Department of Homeland Security to do Immigration Enforcement.
In May of 2009, NorthStar organized a panel featuring representatives from Michigan Workers Centers, highlighting the successes and challenges of Centro Obrero from Detroit, and Kalamazoo Community Workers Center. This event inspired members of the Lansing community to begin organizing a Lansing Workers’ Center to be housed at NorthStar Center in partnership with Michigan People’s Action.
NorthStar Center is committed to continuing to hold events such as our annual May Day March and Celebration for workers and immigrant rights, presentations by local activists on issues ranging from Occupied Palestine, the Role of Art in Social Movements from the Justseeds/Visual Resistance Artists’ Cooperative, and the experiences unionizing from the Starbucks Workers Union.
This summer we have initiated monthly potlucks to bring together our community of people working for justice to socialize and enjoy each others’ company. We have also held outdoor film screenings and hosted a continuing Popular Education Series including classes on Container Gardening, Screen Printing, and Cooking with Fresh Produce.
NorthStar is an integral part of the Lansing community and we need your help to continue our work and build for the future. We especially want monthly donations so that we have a secure donation base throughout the year. With your help we can continue expanding our projects and empowering, supporting and facilitating others to organize here in our community.

We are gearing up for the Fall and we need your help to keep going – support us now!
Yours in Struggle,
